Land-Locked

Peace!

So... I'm one of those people who are TOTALLY enamored of other cultures. I love learning about cultures, interacting with people from different cultures, learning languages, etc. However my experience with other cultures is completely dependent on people moving to where I live... I have never been outside of the United States. Not even to Mexico or Canada!

I grew up in a pretty poor household. I mean... we had enough money to eat and live and everything, thanks God, but there wasn't really anything for extra. My parents found a second job delivering school buses for a local company, so we traveled around the U.S. quite a bit so that was pretty lucky. I know people who have been overseas, but haven't been to more than 3 or 4 states here. But anyway... that never really satisfied my cultural itch.

But THEN I started college. I really love college... so many different people from all over the world! It was fantastic. It still is fantastic. I've learned a little bit of a few different languages (Greek, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi) and I have a lot of friends who are international students. I learned a whole lot about how the rest of the world views my country... some good some bad but all interesting. I really really appreciate that God put these people in my life!! My international friends are also the ones who introduced me to Islam, which I am falling more and more in love with by the day. All good things right?

Hopefully one day I'll get to go somewhere and maybe visit some of my friends in their homes. That would be really cool... :-)

I so agree its good to have friends from all over! It opens up ur mind alot more. I am dying to visit other countries (mostly Muslim) such as Turkey, Egypt,Morocco,Saudi,Malaysia, Yemen etc etc. I love trying out new food too. Insha'allah next year I will begin with Egypt!

I am exactly the same way! Thankfully I did finally get to visit some other countries. My husband and I went to Dubai in 2005 for our honeymoon, and visited Egypt in 2007 when our friend Sherif moved back home. I also learned to speak Somali fluently just by working with and hanging out with Somalis all the time, so I know that you can definitely learn a lot without leaving home too.

Yeah very interesting. I really don't have friends from all around the world, but I like reading blogs, I think it is a way of becoming familiar with other nationalities and their cultures etc.
Yay technology is soaring make the best of it.
